Board Members and Staff

 

Staff

Amanda Mole is the Manager and Staff Architect for the ARB. She holds Bachelor of Science and Masters of Architecture degrees from Georgia Tech with study abroad in Paris. She has fifteen years of experience in commercial and residential architecture, holding architectural licenses in South Carolina, Georgia, and Tennessee. Prior to coming to Kiawah in 1999, she designed and managed projects for architectural and interior design firms in Atlanta, with focus on golf and country club design. She currently practices architecture in the Lowcountry beyond Kiawah and consults with several residential review boards in the Charleston area. Amanda also manages the Cassique ARB and the Terrapin Island ARB for Kiawah Development Partners.

Nancy Jackson is the Landscape Coordinator for the ARB. She has a master's degree in landscape architecture from Ball State University as well as a bachelor of science degree in natural resources and environmental science from Purdue University. During her involvement with the Environmental Responsibility Committee at Earlham College, Nancy oversaw the writing of a recycling grant application, which was selected to be funded, in November of 2006, by the Indiana Department of Environmental Management. Nancy's other passionate interests include horticulture, sustainable development, and water shaping.

Leslie King is the Compliance Coordinator for the ARB. She has a Bachelor of Science degree in Sociology from the College of Charleston. She has extensive background in the service industry, including customer relations and recruitment. Before joining the ARB in 2004, she was on staff with Kiawah Island Golf Resort. She held several positions at the resort most recently in conference and events management. Her position with the ARB focuses not only on compliance issues but also on the ARB submittal process. Leslie also serves as the staff ARB liaison to the Kiawah Island Community Association.

Sarah Komarnicki is the ARB office coordinator. She has a bachelor's degree from the University of South Carolina in Business Management, and a Master's degree in Elementary Education, also from the University of South Carolina. Before joining the ARB, Sarah was involved in Retail Management, where she utilized her business degree and gained experience and knowledge about customer relations. Along with her administrative duties for the ARB, Sarah also handles guideline questions, distributes setback information, and provides assistance with processing of submittals.

Kiawah Board

Roy Smith has worked with the Board periodically for several years, mostly recently returning as Chairman in 2005. He has practiced architecture in locations as diverse as Atlanta, Tokyo, and Wyoming, as well as coastal South Carolina. He brings a unique perspective to the Board, as he earned not only a master's degree in architecture at Clemson, but also a law degree from the University of Wyoming. The Architectural side of his business ranges from forensics (determining causes and solutions for problems in architecture and construction) to design to construction administration. He received his license to practice Architecture in 1989 and was admitted to the South Carolina bar in 1994. He currently practices both architecture and law in the state.

Mark Permar served as vice president of planning and design for the Kiawah Island Company, the original developers for Kiawah. As such, he was involved in all aspects of planning for Kiawah's development dating back to 1979, and he has remained as a consultant since KRA's purchase of the Island in 1988. In addition to his consulting work for KRA and other Coastal communities, Permar advises the Chautauqua Institution in upstate New York on architecture and long-range planning. He holds a degree in architecture from the University of Cincinnati and is licensed to practice architecture in the state of Georgia.

Alexey Grigorieff is a partner in the architectural firm of MG Architects, LLC. He earned his Masters of Architecture at Princeton University and Bachelors degree in architecture at the University of Toronto. He is a licensed architect in the states of South Carolina and New York and a member of NCARB. He has worked on projects in the United States and Japan and has been in private practice in Charleston since 2001. He currently serves on the board of the Building Enclosure Council.

Spencer Nash, a member of KRA's Design & Planning department, became a member of the board in 2000. He is a licensed Landscape Architect. After earning his degree in landscape architecture from the University of Kentucky, he joined the Design & Planning team in 1995. He played a significant role in the landscaping of both The River Course and Cassique golf courses, as well as more recently Freshfields Village. He also designs and directs the landscaping of the common areas for all new property releases, such as in The Settlement and in The Preserve.

Lois Bryant is the property owner representative on the Board. As liaison to the community, she represents homeowner interests and provides a layman's view on aesthetic issues. Her family environment includes a builder, an architect, a legislator, and an art teacher. She has a bachelor's degree in marketing, with a minor in art, and a master's degree in organizational development. Prior to becoming a Kiawah homeowner and resident in 1996, Lois was an organizational development consultant in Michigan, specializing in planning for strategic change. While on Kiawah she has served as president of the Governor's Club Ladies Nine Holers, a docent for Historic Charleston's Russell House, a writer for the Kiawah Digest, and Marketing Chair for both the Gibbes Etc's Art and House Tour and the Symphony Showhouse.

Cassique Board

Leonard Long runs the legal and marketing departments for Kiawah Development Partners. A lawyer for about three decades, he served as Charleston County attorney when Kiawah's rezoning application was negotiated in 1975. Since the 1988 purchase, he has directed every major company transaction and marketing initiative, including Legends magazine, for which he serves as publisher. He also personally oversees many details pertaining to the ongoing development of The Kiawah Island Club and Doonbeg Golf Club.

Glenn Keyes Glenn Keyes has been in private practice in Charleston since 1986. His firm specializes in the preservation of historic buildings and the design of new buildings within an historic context. He holds a Bachelor of Architecture degree from the University of Tennessee and a Masters of Architecture specializing in Historic Preservation from the University of Florida. Glenn served as the Preservation Architect for the restoration of the historic Vanderhorst Mansion on Kiawah Island.
